History
In 1970, a small group of local citizens initiated and incorporated the Manchester Community Child Care Association, Inc. as a state-licensed, not-for-profit organization for the care of young children in the North Manchester community.
In its early years, the Association inhabited many different locations including churches and other community facilities. In 1982, a building was built at 806 West South Street. The Manchester Early Learning Center thrived at this location for 35 years before moving to its current location in 2017. Now at 705 North Market Street, Manchester Early Learning Center is in a more central location with easy access to Warvel Park, North Manchester Public Library, and Strauss-Peabody Aquatic and Fitness Center. It is the only State-licensed, not-for-profit learning and care center in Wabash County. MELC is a United Fund agency and is operated by a volunteer Board of Directors.
With an enrollment fee schedule structured to meet the needs of lower income families, MELC enrolls children of any family interested in quality learning experiences for their children. The center is licensed for a capacity of one hundred and eight children. The Center is open year-round, five days a week, with some exceptions for holidays, from 6:30 am to 5:30 pm. It employs a teaching and support staff of twenty persons including both full and part-time employees. We plan daily activities that target creativity, reading, math, science, and fine motor skills. We believe that by developing the body and the mind we can help create a better future for our kids.
